INSIDERS’ VENICE  2
Venice in the 18th Century

OCTOBER 11  -16  2009

John Hall’s ITALIAN JOURNEYS with VENICE IN PERIL

Venice in Peril
Appropriately, we have a special relationship with the Venice in Peril Fund, and included in the cost of each tour is a donation to VIP.

The 2009  Insiders’ Venice will focus on Venice in the 18th Century, particularly on the work of  Giambattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo. Visits may include Ca’Rezzonico - the Museum of 18th Century Venice , the Churches of the Gesuati, the Pieta, La Fava ,  SS. Apostoli, S.Polo, S . Alvise, the Palazzo Mocenigo,  the Scuola dei Carmini, the Casino Venier,  La Fenice Theatre,   the Palazzo Pisani Moretta, the Palazzo Sandi.

Apart from our focus theme, it would be disappointing not to re-visit some old favourites. The tour will include a private visit to the Fondazione Giorgio Cini on the island of S. Giorgio Maggiore, with its two beautiful cloisters, Palladian refectory, Longhena’s library and double staircase and the magnificent Palladian church with two outstanding altarpieces by Tintoretto.  Torcello cannot be left out . After visiting the Basilica of Santa  Maria Assunta and Santa Fosca on Torcello we take lunch on Burano, in the Ristorante da Romano, an old lace workshop. We include San Marco but with a difference - in the evening, when closed to the public, with the mosaics illuminated, a chance to look closely at the  Pala d ’Oro and to visit the crypt.

A definitive itinerary will be sent to participants two months before the tour begins.

Following the prescription in J.G.Links  Venice for Pleasure,  apart from the luxury of a charming hotel as our base, during our daily walk-abouts coffee breaks, where possible in pleasing surroundings, are included in our itineraries. On the occasional evenings when dinner together is not in the programme, those coming on their own will be looked after.

Providing a musical dimension, there will be an operatici evening at the Palazzo Barbarigo-Minotto, when a shortened version of a classic Italian opera will be performed.
